Want to really find out what you need to work on in your personal and business life?… Getting feedback from the people closest to you…
This is a method I used some years ago to find out what others thought of me, things I did that frustrated them and areas where they thought I could improve.
All you need to do is send an email to your family, friends and close work colleagues asking for their honest feedback… I’d say no more than 5 initially.
In the email you need to start by setting the scene.
Explain that you are sending the email because you are hoping they can provide you with very important feedback that will help you improve the way you live your personal and business life, and as a close family member/friend/colleague their feedback is important to you.
You are looking for the recipients to tell you anything that they feel you currently do that doesn’t help you in your life, anything you do that makes it difficult to work with you, anything they don’t like that you do, etc.
You can give an example if you think that’ll help but I prefer not to, I don’t want to lead them down a certain path.
Be clear that you understand this is unusual and assure them that you will not take offence at all.
This is important, especially for you.
Remember, you are asking for feedback and it’s feedback that can change your life for the better, so getting the hump when someone is honest with you isn’t ok here!
If you are a little worried you can even put in the mail that they can put some positives about you too, to help balance things up somewhat. This may help the recipients feel comfortable too.
As you receive the mails, create a document where you can write all areas you need to improve.
For each point you need to be honest with yourself and determine whether you think this feedback is fair, when we are really honest with ourselves over 90% will be justified.
Then for each point you need to develop an action plan for change.
Don’t forget to write an email of thanks to the people that send you feedback.
The feedback that they send you can help you change your life for the better.
You will find out what you do that frustrates others, times when you can be difficult and times when you cause problems for others.
Working on your areas of development will improve you friendships, work efficiencies, results and quality of life.
This can be a daunting exercise, but it can be so valuable.
Getting feedback like this can only be good for you!
Give it a try…. Let me know how you get on in the comments below…
